Litter collected by East Hamilton class
There is a problem at every school that is not really talked about. Litter. Where does it come from? Where does it go? What do we do with it?
Mr. Maples’ senior ecology class at East Hamilton is developing solutions to this very problem. Beginning two weeks ago, the ecology classes went outside and picked up the litter around the school campus. Trash bags were filled with garbage that students carelessly threw on the ground. Even tires have been found lying around the back of the student parking lot.
With all of this garbage collected, Mr. Maples started a display showing students, teachers, and parents what and how much they litter. This junk pile helps to bring awareness of the litter problem to people. Maybe they will think twice before throwing their trash on the ground.
Additionally, Mr. Maples divided his students into groups of two. Each group was responsible for starting a campaign against littering. Several groups are producing infomercials and some groups are making posters. My partner, Lucas Weir, and I are responsible for informing the community of what East Hamilton is trying to do and to gain support for this anti-litter movement. Who knows, maybe this little bit of awareness will make you think where you deposit your biscuit wrapper or water bottle.
