Worked For 45 Years For City Of Chattanooga

Ruth Thomas died on Sunday, November 16, 2014. 

She was born March 3, 1925 to Sonny T. and Mary Thomas. Ruth was educated in the public school system in Chattanooga, and worked for 45 years for the City of Chattanooga. During her years serving as the elevator operator at City Hall, Ruth was fondly referred to as “The Mayor of City Hall”.

Ruth was a devoted member of St. James Baptist Church where she provided a life of service as musician for more than 40 years. 

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and her two brothers, Clifford and Clayton Thomas. 

She is survived by her nieces, Latanga Thomas-Campbell and Cheryl Thomas; cousins, Oscar and Dorothy Garrett; special friends, former co-workers, self-adopted daughters and sons; and a host of friends, former co-workers, and City of Chattanooga officials. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Rheubin M. Taylor as eulogist. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery. 

The body will lie in state after noon on Thursday, Nov. 20, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
