Southern Adventist University will host its annual Christmas Tree Lighting event on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short program including performances by Deep 6, Southern Ringtones, Expressions of Praise, Collegedale Academy Band, and the Southern Strings and Jazz Ensembles. The University will also host speaker Daniel R.

Jacobson, vice president of Properties and Corporate Services at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hulsey Wellness Center. His presentation, “Tales of an Itinerant Birder,” will cover how birding and ornithology, the study of birds, play a role in enhancing daily life and will illustrate the value of learning about the natural world.   Mr. Jacobson grew up in the Chattanooga area and has spent many days birding locally and across the state. Southern student Sarahi Remolina's collection of 24 digital illustrations about the Great Controversy--conflict between Jesus and Satan that began in Heaven and will continue until the world is destroyed and recreated--opens at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the John C. Williams Art Gallery located in Brock Hall on the campus of Southern Adventist University. The show runs through Jan. 9, 2015. For more information, call 423 236-2732Ms. Remolina describes the dream she had to create a series of paintings to line a wall in heaven as a memorial of Jesus’ work of redemption. She decided to make her dream a reality to inspire people to have a relationship with God. “I want people to see the Bible story as something amazing,” she said. “In the show, there are 30 paintings that portray salvation, the ministry of Jesus, the world’s final events, and the new Earth, either literally or symbolically.” 

The annual Kirsten Wolcott Memorial 5K Run will be on on Friday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. The run is to commemorate the death of Kirsten Wolcott, a junior liberal arts education major, who died while serving as a student missionary in Yap, Micronesia. Participants will be ranked by the top 20 males and females. The run is free for community members and no prior registration is required.

The School of Music Christmas Concert will be hosted on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. The concert will feature the Choral Ensembles and the Symphony Orchestra who will perform George Frederic Handel’s “Messiah.” This event is free and open to the public.  Conductor Gennevieve Brown-Kibble holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Andrews University, a master’s degree in vocal performance from Indiana University, and a doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona.

The Christmas Pops Concert will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. The concert will include performances from the Wind Symphony, the Jazz Ensemble, the Percussion Ensemble, and the Southern Ringtones. The event is free and open to the public.  Music selections include “Dashing Through the Snow” by Richard Southerncedo, “The Eighth Candle” by Steve Reisteter, “Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head” by John Jacob Niles, “Wassail Dances” by Philip Lane, “Fum, Fum, Fum” by Chip Davis, “Bellringer’s Fantasy” by Randol Alan Bass, and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson. Other songs to be announced.  Conductor Ken Parsons holds bachelor’s degrees in music education and theology from Walla Walla University and a master’s degree in brass performance from the University of Oregon. He plays the trumpet and has toured across the country both in orchestral and wind ensembles and as a soloist.
