Mocs Win Big Over Furman, Undefeated In Conference Play

UTC Playoff Opponent To Be Announced Sunday Morning

  • Saturday, November 22, 2014

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team put a cherry on top of its 2014 regular season with Saturday’s 45-19 win at Furman (3-9, 2-5 SoCon).  The victory gives the No. 9 Mocs (9-3, 7-0 SoCon) its first ever undefeated Southern Conference slate and its first nine-win season since 1979.

Junior quarterback Jacob Huesman led the way with 257 passing yards and two scores and 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns.  Senior running back Keon Williams twice found the endzone, setting a new UTC career rushing touchdown record with 29.

Chattanooga jumped in front with a one-yard run by Huesman in the first quarter, but Furman came right back to even the game at 7-7 in the opening period.  Huesman scored again in the second and sophomore kicker Henrique Ribeiro made it 17-7 with a 39-yard field goal.

That looked like the halftime score before the Mocs defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 2:19 left.  UTC put together a nine-play, 71-yard drive to go up 24-7 at the break.

Highlights in that drive included a 13-yard run by Huesman on third and three, and his 16-yard run on third and 10.  It was capped off by a 17-yard touchdown catch by Faysal Shafaat, one of two scoring hauls by the senior tight end.

Chattanooga tacked on another score on its opening possession of the second half.  Williams popped a 32-yard run up the middle to give Chattanooga a comfortable 31-7 lead with 8:26 left in the third.  That run by Williams gave him 28 rushing TDs for his career, tying Gene Roberts' (1945-46) 68-year old school-record.

Furman would score again in the third, but failed on a two-point conversion attempt, narrowing Chattanooga’s lead to 31-13.  An eight-yard run by Williams and an eight-yard catch by Shafaat in the fourth rounded out the Mocs tally.  Furman also scored in the final frame and again failed on a two-point conversion, for the 45-19 final.

Huesman ran 14 times for his 103 yards, while connecting on 17-23 passes for 257.  It is the seventh time in his career, and the first time this season, he has passed and ran for over 100 yards.  Williams had 18 carries for 97 yards and the two scores, while Shafaat had three catches for 32 yards.

Freshman Alphonso Stewart led the receivers with five catches for 63 yards, all in the first half.  Senior Tommy Hudson added four catches for 84 yards.

Offensively, the Mocs were one-yard short of their fourth 500-yard game of the season.  UTC put up 257 passing and 242 on the ground.  The Mocs held the ball for 34:16 while converting eight of 13 on third downs.

Defensively, Chattanooga held the improving Paladins to 325 yards of total offense.  Senior linebacker Muhasibi Wakeel led the way with 10 tackles.  Sophomore defensive end Keionta Davis had his first career interception, while freshman defensive back Trevor Wright added seven stops.

The Mocs will next see where they are headed in the FCS Playoffs with tomorrow’s selection show at 11:00 a.m. in the UC Auditorium.  Doors open for all fans and supporters at 10:30 a.m. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete details.
