Fourteen young ladies graced the stage of the Community Theatre at Memorial Auditorium on Nov. 15, with poise and elegance vying for the crown and title at the Miss Rhomania Pageant. The Miss Rhomania Pageant is Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s highly anticipated scholarship fundraiser in Chattanooga held every three years.
The pageant is a 10-month experience that begins with a mother-daughter tea and ends on a stage of spotlights. Throughout the experience, participants receive etiquette training, earn community service hours, develop leadership and social skills, learn a coordinated dance, and establish friendships.
The 2014 Little Miss Rhomania contestants were: Jahkira Bryant, LTae’ Bryant, Malaya Middlebrook, T’Lea Scott, Layla Smith, and Naveah Torrence. The 2014 Miss Rhomania contestants were: Akeia Colley, Amari Hines, Kearri’anna Johnson, Jaliah Lloyd, Montia Poole, Al’anna Smith, Kirsten Smith, and Jakaira Walker.
The winners in the category of Little Miss Rhomania were: 1st place - Layla Smith, 2nd place – Malaya Middlebrook, and 3rd place – LTae’ Bryant. The coronation of Little Miss Rhomania was extra special as the crowd witnessed the 2011 Little Miss Rhomania winner, Little Miss Jayla Burgess crown her cousin, Little Miss Layla Smith. Layla is the seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith. The winners is the category of Miss Rhomania were: 1stplace – Kirsten Smith, 2nd place – Kearri’anna Johnson, and 3rd place – Amari Hines. Miss Bry’Anna Robinson, 2011 Miss Rhomania winner, had the pleasure of crowning Miss Kirsten Smith. Kirsten is the twelve year old daughter of LaShundra Swafford and Darrell Smith.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on Nov. 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University by seven female educators. As a part of the pageant, the local chapter recognized seven distinguished women in honor of the sorority’s illustrious founders to conclude its Founders Day celebration. These women are trailblazers, civic, entrepreneurs, talented, educated, respected, and fully engaged in the community. The honorees were: Suzette Carlilse, Christy Rashed, Adonia Latham, Felicion McMillon-Diakhate, Dr. Fannie Hewlett, Eunice Rooks, and Rev. Jean Yates.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization’s programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.
