The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team was defeated 3-1 Saturday night in Greensboro, N.C., as UNCG improved to 10-5 in Southern Conference play while UTC fell to 5-9.
Despite the loss, sophomore Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) totaled 12 kills and fellow sophomore Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) followed up with 10 kills. Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) led the offense with 22 assists and senior Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) was the defensive anchor with 18 digs.
Chattanooga claimed the first set 25-21, but fell 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18 in the following three. Wieser collected a set-best three kills in the first with junior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas), sophomore Nicole Sumida (Hixson, Tenn.) and Davenport each had two.
With UNCG claiming a narrow four-point win in the second, Wieser and junior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.) each recorded three kills. However, a .079 hitting percentage would be the downfall of the Mocs in the second as the Spartans hit a slightly better .116 in the frame.
Greensboro hit a match-best .458 in the third to downed UTC by six points, but the score was tied three times with the lead changing once. Wieser and Reid both downed a set-best four kills while the defense posted eight digs and zero blocks.
The final set was a seven-point victory for the Spartans with the score tied just once without a lead change. Davenport posted four kills in frame, but the Mocs’ .216 hitting percentage was not enough to force a fifth set.
Chattanooga returns to Maclellan Gym next weekend to host Wofford and Furman to round out the SoCon season. Saturday will serve as senior day for Green and Brianna Guzinski (Jacksonville, Fla.).
