Program On Sherman's Christmas Gift Set For Dec. 20

  • Thursday, December 11, 2014

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a 30-minute program about the capture of Savannah, Ga at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m.

The Christmas season is often viewed as a time of celebration, of being with family, and the giving of gifts. However, the Christmas of 1864 would hold a number of different meanings, particularly in the case of Savannah, which General William T. Sherman presented as a gift to President Lincoln.

A park ranger will speak about how soldiers, slaves, and civilians viewed the surrender of Savannah as a Christmas gift to the president and as one of the final acts of the great drama of the Civil War.

For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, please contact the Lookout Mountain Visitor Center at 821-7786, the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706.866-9241, or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chch
