Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a 30-minute program about the capture of Savannah, Ga at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m.
The Christmas season is often viewed as a time of celebration, of being with family, and the giving of gifts. However, the Christmas of 1864 would hold a number of different meanings, particularly in the case of Savannah, which General William T. Sherman presented as a gift to President Lincoln.
A park ranger will speak about how soldiers, slaves, and civilians viewed the surrender of Savannah as a Christmas gift to the president and as one of the final acts of the great drama of the Civil War.
