A late first half surge lifted Berry past the Covenant women's basketball team 68-46 on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.
The loss for the Scots drops them to 0-8 on the season, while Berry improves to 6-2 overall. The game was the final one for Covenant before Christmas Break. The Scots will be back in action on Jan. 2 at Ferrum in a USA South opener.
Liz Dougherty scored a career-high 16 points while Haley Soles added 12 points and Morgan Woodward seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Covenant fell behind 7-2 in the early going but rallied to take a lead. A Soles 3-pointer with 12:38 left in the half gave the Scots a 16-11 lead and Covenant would retain a slim margin after an Alex Quimby triple made it 19-17 with 8:36 remaining. Berry, however, would turn up the defensive pressure and score the final 22 points of the half to take a 39-19 lead into the break.
Berry's Emma Cook led all players with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds to complete the double-double. Chanlir Segarra tallied 12 points and six assists, while Zarriah Pierce had 10 points.
Covenant shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54) for the game, but held Berry to 43.8 percent (28-of-64). Berry came into the contest shooting 36.7 percent from 3-point land but were limited to just 1-for-22 (4.5 percent) on Saturday.
After final exams and Christmas Break, the Scots open up USA South play with four straight road games starting on Jan. 2 at Ferrum. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Ferrum, Virginia.
