Cleveland State Introduces New Scholarship Program

  • Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Cleveland State Community College is proud to support Governor Haslam and the Tennessee State Legislature who have made higher education a top priority in our state. That is why CSCC is offering a new scholarship program to provide even greater value to the Tennessee Promise program.

“From the day Tennessee Promise was approved by the State Legislature, Cleveland State enacted a Tennessee Promise Implementation Team,” stated Dr. Bill Seymour, Cleveland State President. “Multiple strategies were developed to plan and prepare for the entering class of 2015. Tennessee Promise will get students to our campus and CSCC is committed to helping every one of them be successful.”

The goal of this new program is to help Tennessee Promise Students succeed academically and persist to graduation and to provide greater support for adult students who need assistance to achieve their career goals. The new scholarships include Book Assistance, Presidential Honors and Adult Promise Scholarships.

The Book Assistance Scholarships will include a first semester fund to assist Tennessee Promise students who have no other means to buy their books, as well as an incentive fund for Tennessee Promise students who pass 15 or more hours in a semester. Those who do will receive funding assistance for books the following semester.

“While Tennessee Promise will give more financially challenged students an opportunity for college, we are concerned about their ability to succeed if they cannot afford their textbooks,” stated Seymour. “Our Textbook Scholarship Fund will focus on those students who have no other options for buying their books.”

The Presidential Honors Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program for top Tennessee Promise students who attend CSCC. This includes participation in the CSCC Honors Program plus the Presidential Leadership Program the first semester.

Dr. Seymour said, “Tennessee Promise is likely to bring a great diversity of students to community colleges. The top academic students may be trying to decide if they will use their Tennessee Promise scholarship at the community college or go to a university. Through our Honors Program and the Presidential Honors Scholarship, we want these students to know that Cleveland State has an academic environment here that will be challenging, engaging and rewarding.”

The Adult Promise Scholarships are a need-based, last-dollar scholarship for adult students who require financial assistance to manage college attendance.

Dr. Seymour stated, “Cleveland State recognizes that Tennessee Promise is limited to students coming right out of high school. We know that adult students are in great need of financial support to access education that will enhance their careers and livelihoods. This is why CSCC, along with the Cleveland State Foundation have strategically reallocated its scholarship funding to provide even greater assistance to adult students – creating their Adult Promise Scholarship.”

The Tennessee Promise PLUS Scholarships are made possible through a partnership of Cleveland State Community College and the CSCC Foundation, who contribute over $500,000 annually to student scholarship programs combined.
