Chattanooga Police said Brandon McArthur Varnell followed 36-year-old Shermain Latwon Menifee around before shooting him on Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 3:16 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to a local hospital for a person shot.

Police were advised that a male victim arrived suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Brandon McArthur Varnell, 25, was arrested early Wednesday evening by members of the Crime Suppression Unit. He is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission or attempt of a dangerous felony, and unlawful possession.

The victim said he has known Varnell for a long time and they had an ongoing problem.

He said he had noticed a 1999 or 2000 gray Volvo following him around for quite a while.

He said when the Volvo got beside his car, the Volvo stopped and the window was rolled down.

The victim said Varnell was the only person in the car. He raised a handgun and shot through the victim's car door, striking him in the left thigh.

The victim drove to his aunt's house and his cousin took him to the hospital.

He said a female friend told him she had overherd Varnell saying he was going to get him.
