The residents of Collegedale will be getting a new place to gather. At the commission meeting Monday night the commissioners unanimously gave approval for spending up to $1.3 million for the purchase of land where Collegedale Commons will be built.
A new community center to be known as Collegedale Commons is planned for eight acres adjacent to city hall on land that is owned by Southern Adventist University. The cost of the entire land purchase will come from a private donor.
The Collegedale Tomorrow Foundation will raise funds for building the facilities that will be city owned. Mayor Katie Lamb said the concept for the community center is to provide a place for events such as concerts, farmers markets, arts and crafts shows or family get-togethers.
Another vote approved providing funding to make improvements to the police firing range. Among other things, the money will be used to buy and install a trailer at the location and to run electric power service to it. The commission authorized spending no more than $90,000 for the project.
Mayor Lamb made appointments for two vacant positions on city boards. Commissioner Phil Garver accepted a position on the Collegedale Planning Commission. Commissioner Ethan White will fill a vacancy in the Parks and Recreation Department.
The next meeting of the Collegedale Commission will be Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
