Daughter Of American Revolution Completes Service Project

  • Tuesday, December 23, 2014

The Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. A recent innovation within the DAR, the Visions Course, is a training program for future national, state and local leaders. This program includes on-line courses, writing of essays, and quizzes. Additionally, each daughter taking the course is required to do a community service project.

Susan Lindsey of Hixson, as a member of the Judge David Campbell Chapter, is currently taking the Visions Course. As her community service project, she chose to collect books, which supports the focus on education, especially literacy. As the daughter of a former school teacher and an avid reader herself, she felt the need to put books in the hands of those who do not have either the resources to purchase books or the opportunity to visit a library would be a process that would fulfill a need present in the community.

During the three month period of the collection, she amassed 547 books. Over 200 of these books are for children and adults to read together. Over 100 are elementary and middle school literature, including classics such as Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson, and Twenty-Thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne. Another 200 plus books are suitable for young adults and adults.

Donations also included computer, financial, and faith-based books, books on nutrition and health, antiques and education, such as history, science, and art. Also collected were puzzles for young children, DVDs for children and adults, and magazines.

When it came time to deliver the books, Ms. Lindsey called on her husband, Michael Lindsey, to serve as the brawn and driver of his truck, and on Nancy Henderson, a member of the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR. Ms. Henderson had suggested the book collection and Ms. Lindsey felt that Ms. Henderson, who is involved with several organizations which promotes literacy within the Chattanooga area, would be a resource as to where to place the books.

After one phone call, Ms. Henderson had a taker, not for just a few book, but for the entire collection. The Northside Neighborhood House, whose mission is to promote the independence of residents north of the river by providing a hand up through education and assistance, was the gratefully recipient.

The books will be used in their after-school programs for children and in their literacy training program. The magazines will be placed in the lobby for casual reading and the DVDs will also be used in their after-school programs.

The Northsid Neighborhood House celebrated 90 years of serving the community on March 13. As a relationship-centered organization, the NNH focuses on the complete family. The organization offers a back to school shop in the fall and holds an annual Christmas party in December, while, throughout the year, serving the families of neighborhoods on the north side of the river.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation's children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 165,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations.
