Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP Jubilee Day To Be Jan. 1

  • Tuesday, December 23, 2014

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP will host their annual Jubilee Day celebration on Thursday, Jan. 1.

Jubilee Day affords African-Americans and the at-large community the opportunity to come together once a year to celebrate freedom from slavery.  It is a time when the history of suffering endured under slavery is remembered; the experience of segregation is recounted; the courageous efforts of individuals who fought to end slavery is recognized; and the strategies for facing equality and justice for the  future are reshaped, said officials.

Per the theme of the United Nations recent Human Rights Day 2014, Human Rights is 365, this year the Jubilee Day theme is All Lives Matter.

The celebration will be held at First Baptist Church, 506 East Eight St., where the Rev. William Terry Ladd III is the host pastor. The service begins at 11 a.m. The primary speaker for the occasion will be former Chattanooga-Hamilton County NAACP President Eddie Holmes.

There will also be a ceremony to install the new members of the branch's executive committee, including newly incoming President Dr. Elenora Woods.

Members of the general public at-large and community are welcome.
