Dr. Walter Mauldin, a former senior member of the Lee University administrative team, will return to deliver the address at Lee’s winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Conn Center.

Dr. Mauldin served as a vice president at Lee until resigning earlier this year to accept an appointment as the program director of the Church of God Smoky Mountain Children’s Home located in Sevierville, Tenn., where Mayor Bryan Atchley proclaimed Sept. 10 as “Dr. Walt Mauldin Day.”

Prior to his appointment in Sevierville this past August, Dr. Mauldin served at Lee University for 25 years. He served as the vice president for administration, the vice president for student life, the dean of the School of Music, director of the Lee Singers, director of graduate studies in music, professor of music, and founder of the Lee University Honor Choir, Summer Music Camp, Honor Band, and Chapel Choir. He also established the Lee Singers Scholarship and the Penny Mauldin Memorial Scholarship.

Dr. Mauldin received a DMA degree in choral conducting from the University of Miami, after completing a master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an undergraduate degree from Lee College. He also did post-doctoral studies at Emory University while on a sabbatical from his administrative duties at Lee.

He is married to Tammie Mauldin; they share three sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren.

Lee’s winter commencement is one of three graduation ceremonies held each year at the university, the others being held in the spring and summer.  The winter ceremony combines the music and decorations of the Christmas season with traditional commencement activities. Over 200 graduates will receive degrees in the Saturday morning ceremony, and the Lee University Chorale will provide special music.

Prior to the Saturday commencement, a commissioning ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., also in the Conn Center. The commissioning service is a special occasion for students and their families to reflect on their experiences at the university. During the event, there are six student speakers who share brief stories about their time at Lee; each graduate is presented with a personalized Bible in a traditional walk across the Conn Center stage.

A hooding ceremony for recipients of master’s and education specialist degrees will take place Friday, Dec. 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the Lee University Chapel.

For those wishing to view each of the three events, live streaming will be available at www.leeuniversity.edu/video/.  The hooding, commissioning, and commencement ceremonies are ticketed events.
