Bradley County Sheriff Eric Watson warns area citizens of a scam involving a person or persons allegedly representing the Internal Revenue Service.
The scam targets people by telephone, with the “IRS agent” telling the citizen they will be prosecuted for a tax violation unless they pay the fake “IRS” representative an amount of money placed on a reloadable card known as a Green Dot card. If the payment is made, the so-called “tax violation” would be taken off the person’s record. Information indicates the caller speaks in broken English, leaving instructions and a number to call back when the money has been deposited on the Green Dot card.
Sheriff Watson strongly advises this is a complete scam that the Internal Revenue Service does not do business via phone or by using the so-called Green Dot card. If anyone receives a call from these scam artists, they should not give them money or any sensitive financial information, and should call the nearest law enforcement agency.
