2 Children Die After Car Overturns In Pond In Bledsoe County

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Two children died Monday night when their mother's SUV overturned into a pond in Bledsoe County.

The mother and two of her other children were able to get out safely in the incident on Rigsby Mountain in the New Harmony community.

Monique Einwechter, 24, had recently moved to Bledsoe County from Pennsylvania with her husband and the four children. They moved near the children's grandparents.

A neighbor said the mother did not want the children exposed to paint fumes at a home they were fixing up. She loaded them into the SUV and they drove down Hoffman Drive toward Wooden Loop Road. The car slipped off the road and into the pond.

A 2-year-old and 1-year-old did get out safely, but a six-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl died after the car continued to roll into the water and overturned.

First responders arrived about 8:45 p.m.

Ms. Einwechter was wearing a seat belt at the time of the tragic accident and all four children were restrained.
