Lee University School Of Music To Present Faculty Recital

Lee’s School of Music will host Lee faculty Janet Hale, Gordon James, and Mary Beth Wickes in recital on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall located in the Humanities Center.

The program will include pieces such as “Souvenir du Rigi, Op. 38” by Albert Franz Doppler, “Elegy for Horn and Piano” by Francis Poulenc, “Summer Night” by Katherine Hoover, and “Ballade, Pastorale, and Dance” by Eric Ewazen.                                                                                       

Ms. Hale, a flute instructor at Lee University and Covenant College, has concluded her 40th season as principle flute player with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. She has a private studio of select students and enjoys the one-on-one experience of working with young flutists. As one of the founders of the Chattanooga Area Flute Society, Ms. Hale has served on the Local 80 Musicians Union Board and also works with various committees of the CSO. 

Ms. Hale received a master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Tennessee. She also has completed a Bachelor of Music degree and Bachelor of Science in Music Education.

Mr. James, an adjunct horn instructor at Lee, Southern Adventist University, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Covenant College, has been playing and teaching horn for over 30 years. Serving as principal horn of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, he has been a member of the CSO since 1987. Prior to that, Mr. James played with the Fort Worth Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Dallas Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony.

Mr. James received music performance degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the University of North Texas.

Ms. Wickes is the director of accompanying at Lee’s School of Music, coordinating the staff accompanists as well as serving as a staff accompanist. She is also the accompanist for Choral Union, one of the many choirs at Lee.

She served as pianist/organist and adult ensemble director at First Baptist Church for 26 years and is currently is an organist at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
