Dyersburg Eagles Snatch Pair Of Wins From Cleveland State

Monday, March 10, 2014 - by Bryan Grisham
The Cleveland State baseball team came up on the short end of the scoreboard twice on Monday afternoon at Eagle Field. The Dyersburg State Eagles soared to a pair of wins as they capitalized on several Cougar mistakes in game one to take an 8-4 win and then finished the day with a dramatic come-from-behind win in game two, 3-2.

The Cougars jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in their first at-bat in game one as Chris Davis knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the third as Evan Speicher reached base and eventually scored on a passed ball while Dalton Rogers also scored, this time on the back end of a well executed double steal.

The Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the third as Tyler Boles singled in a run and then took the lead in a big way with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Boles singled in another run in the fourth while two runs crossed on passed balls and another on a wild pitch. Another run came across in the fifth on a wild pitch while Lucas Bigler doubled in a pair to push the lead to 8-3.

Cole Baxley doubled in a run for the Cougars in the seventh, but the rally ended there as the Eagles finished game one. Heath Petty went the distance for the Eagles (13-7) to get the win while Jake Wright took the loss for the Cougars (11-9, 4-5). Raunel Perez, Gabe Rich and Jordan Whitmire all pitched in relief for the Cougars.

The Cougars dented the scoreboard first in game two as well with a run in the top of the second inning. Zach Janes and Brock Johnson each singled and Anthony Hunt plated the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 1-0 lead.

Mo Ojeda singled and came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game for the Eagles in the bottom of the second.

The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until the top of the sixth when the Cougars managed to scratch out a run and take the lead. Hunt got things started by taking one for the team, Chris Caffrey doubled to put runners on second and third and Janson Roberson got plunked to load the bases. Jammer Strickland then coaxed a free pass to push the run across for a 2-1 Cougar advantage.

The visitors let one slip away in the bottom of the seventh as the Eagles staged a dramatic last at-bat rally. Boles once again was right in the middle of the action as he took one for the team to reach base. A fielders choice and two walks filled the bases with Eagles and Taylor Ellis ended game two with a clutch two-run single to give the home team a sweep of the twinbill and also two out of three in the weekend series.

Zackary Gonzalez picked up the win for the Eagles in relief of Chase Burkett while Josh Morgan took the loss for the Cougars.

The Hamilton County Commission just grouped a bunch of departments together in an attempt to reign in the CVB. I haven't spoken to any commissioners, but I truly believe it was unknowingly.
