Mayor Andy Berke and County Mayor Jim Coppinger have named Ethan Collier, owner of Collier Construction Company, to be chairman of the Planning Commission.

He will replace the longtime chairman, Dale Mabee.

The City Council is to consider the appointment next Tuesday.

Mr. Collier's firm has been involved in a number of "green" projects.

Mr. Mabee, who served 20 years as Planning Commission chairman over two terms, is the president of the Cornerstone construction and realty group.

John Bridger, executive director of the Regional Planning Agency, said Mr. Mabee "will be stepping down to pursue further development of his business and to spend more time with his family."

Mr. Mabee said,  “Planning has been a passion of mine since I first served as an intern and planner with the Chattanooga Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency after graduating college. During my 20-plus years of service on the Commission, I have been honored to serve as a Planning Commissioner through several mayoral administrations that allowed me to continue my passion for planning”.

“Mr. Mabee has maintained a high level of professionalism and integrity for the Planning Commission as they consider development proposals that shape our community,” noted County Mayor  Coppinger.

“On behalf of our City and its citizens, I want to thank Dale for his committed service and leadership to the Planning Commission for these many years”, added Mayor Berke.

Don Moon, a current Planning Commissioner who has served with Mr. Mabee during most of his tenure shared, “Dale Mabee is a colleague and friend that has proven to be an excellent chairman for the RPC.  His long history in the planning field has given Dale a unique perspective as chairman.  His experience and knowledge of planning and our community has been of great value.  It has been a pleasure to serve with him.  He will be missed.”

Officials said, "With over 10 years experience as owner of Collier Construction, Mr. Collier has demonstrated leadership and innovation in the homebuilding industry.  In the Chattanooga market, Mr. Collier has pioneered the application of sustainable building practices that minimize waste and promote energy efficiency.  Mr. Collier also brings a passion and interest in increasing community access to housing through his service as a board member of Habitat for Humanity."

“Ethan’s personal commitment to housing innovation, environmental stewardship and housing accessibility will serve the Planning Commission well,” stated Mayor Berke. “As a homebuilder, Ethan brings an understanding of the business of development and the importance of growth to our community,” added County Mayor  Coppinger.

Reflecting on Mr. Collier’s appointment, Mr. Mabee commented, “I feel that both mayors made an excellent choice for my replacement on the Planning Commission.  Ethan’s business experience, combined with his service in the community, will be an asset to the work of the Planning Commission.  I am confident he will serve our community well.”
