A former police officer took his own life in a vehicle on the side of Interstate 24 westbound in Marion County on Tuesday afternoon, causing a traffic backup.

Police had been in pursuit of Charles Keith Murphree, who was wanted out of DeKalb County, Ala., for domestic assault.

He was located by a Jasper Police officer behind the Hardee's off exit 155. He sped away from police onto I-24.

Police said he drove two miles, pulled off, and then shot himself as an officer walked up to the car.

Murphree at one time was an officer for the Ider, Ala., Police Department.
