Chattanooga Has Lost a Good Person And Talented Architect - And Response (3)

  • Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Most Chattanoogans will not recognize the name of Andy Roth.  He passed away at the too early age of 55.  He was an architect with Derthick, Henley, and Wilkerson Architects.

And although you might not recognize his name, most of you drive by his work every day.  Finley Stadium, Covenant Transport, Unum, and many other buildings in Chattanooga are the result of his work.

The first project I worked on with Andy was Finley Stadium.  I remember that it ruined my Labor Day weekend way back when because I had a meeting with Andy on that Monday to discuss the progress of our electrical drawings.  We were a little behind and I remember asking Andy to just yell at me if he was angry, it would make us both feel better.  He would not.

I have worked with numerous people over my career and had never met a kinder, gentler, soul than Andy. To his family, you have my deepest sympathies.  To Chattanooga, you have lost a great treasure of Architecture.

Andy Roth was  a very  talented architect who so happened to be a kind and gentle person.  His lofty stature and cool demeanor gave everyone around him strength and comfort.

Fame  and recognition were not important to Andy. Instead he enjoyed the gift of molding the built environment  in a positive way whether you noticed or not. His life and designs were thoughtful , sensitive, and complete. The spaces that his buildings fill are happy ones.

The void in our lives that he has left will always be remembered as a good one.

I had the privilege of working with Andy on several joint venture projects over the years as well as serving with him on the AIA board and found him to be a true professional and a talented and knowledgeable designer.

I agree with everything that has been said here about him. The built environment in Chattanooga benefited immeasurably by his presence. He will be greatly missed.

The imprint of one Andrew Roth will be forever found on the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus.  This talented architect, humble gentleman, and most treasured friend will be greatly missed. I was honored to work with him for the past 15 years.

He designed the Johnson-Obear Apartments, the Engineering, Math & Computer Science Building, the Aquatic and Recreation Center and his crowning achievement, our beautiful library nearing completion on Douglas and Vine.

I am proud to be a small part of what he created for generations of UTC students.
