A memorial service will be held Sunday for a man who was robbed and shot in the head on Hooker Road.

The service for Warren T. Ransom, 33, will be at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services on McCallie Avenue.

Survivors include his mother, Edith Ransom; sons, Warren T. Ransom Jr. and Demond Ransom; and brother, Michael Dewayne Ransom Jr.

Family members said the victim knew Marcus Birt, who was arrested for killing him.

A friend said, "Warren was a fine man, having won awards for caring for an invalid son who was injured by a car many years ago.  He also worked with needy people around town."

Police said Birt had blood on him and had a gun close to where the body of a man  was found along Hooker Road on Saturday.

Birt, 32, has been charged with criminal homicide, especially aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm in the slaying of 33-year-old Warren Ransom.

The victim was shot once in the head.

Police said the victim was found lying at the lot of a closed business at 1200 Hooker Road.

Pieces of white paint or plastic were on a nearby fence, and it appeared that a vehicle had wrecked into the fence. Police said the victim's white 2003 Chevrolet Impala was found behind a business at 1401 E. 34th St. It had damage as though it had been in a wreck.

A large amount of blood was in the vehicle. The stereo was missing.

A witness said on the day the body was found that Birt was seen with a small silver firearm and he had blood on the back of his shirt and on his hands. The witness said Birt was limping.

He said Birt made the statement that he was "grazed."

The witness said Birt was trying to sell a car CD player, but was unable to sell it. The face from the CD player was then discarded. Police retrieved the CD player face.

Police said they believe that Birt took the CD player out of the blood-covered car after killing the victim.

Birt was arrested on Thursday at 1 p.m. by the Chattanooga Police Fugitive Unit along with U.S. Marshals.

It was Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when Chattanooga Police officers responded to a person down call. A person driving by noticed the body on the side of the road and called 911. Officers arrived and found the body of a black male. The victim was dead on arrival.

Birt was arrested for robbery in 2002 and again in 2011. He got three-year sentences both times.
