UAW And Olivet Baptist Church - And Response

Friday, March 07, 2014

So Olivet Baptist Church opens its doors to the Democrat candidate for the Senate and the UAW to criticize local and national Republican leaders? I would assume being a religious organization that Olivet is a 501 (c) (3) entity and therefore pays no taxes. According to the laws regarding tax free entities they cannot be engaged in any political activity:

Political activity:  Section 501(c)(3) organizations are prohibited from supporting political candidates, and are subject to limits on lobbying. They risk loss of tax exempt status if these rules are violated.[35][36] An organization that loses its 501(c)(3) status due to being engaged in political activities cannot then qualify for 501(c)(4) status.[37]

It would appear that Olivet violated this provision by having both a union and a political candidate criticizing the opposition in their church.

I am sure AG Eric Holder and our "non-partisan" IRS will be in town today investigating this apparent violation. Yeah, right.

As a matter of fact, a church is not a 501©(c)(3).  Churches are exempt from income tax and are not even required to file for exempt status.

They also are not required to file income tax returns.  Regards.
