Lee University senior art majors are displaying their work at a Senior Showcase from now until May 9 at the 5ive Points Museum in downtown Cleveland.
The presenting students include Caroline Peoples, Anna Snider and Oleg Voytenko.
"These students are good representatives of the high quality of art students that are currently in the program at Lee,” said John Simmons, art discipline coordinator at Lee University.
Ms. Peoples is a senior art and psychology major from Birmingham, Ala. She is presenting pieces based on individuals with whom she has intimate relationships.
“In this final showcase, I was inspired to integrate renaissance style and contemporary style painting with the passion I have gained studying and contemplating the human mind,” said Ms. Peoples. “For each piece, I chose to illustrate not only the physical, arbitrary appearance of those dear to me, but also their minds, character, and passions that I have come to observe in developing intimate friendships with each individual.”
Ms. Snider, a senior arts and sociology major from Kingston, Jamaica, is presenting photography and mixed media pieces. She describes her art as dealing with memory and connection. She focused on images she connected with different places and events in her life for this showcase.
“It feels amazing to be presenting in the showcase,” said Ms. Snider. “I've had maybe one or two opportunities before to showcase some of my artwork but never in a setting such as the 5ive Points Museum.”
Mr. Voytenko, a senior studio art major from Cleveland, Tenn., is presenting oil paintings, ceramic pieces, and charcoal drawings. He enjoys working with a combination of 2D and 3D spaces. His oil paintings will have sculptural elements coming out of the painting into 3D space.
“When one looks at my art, I want them to recognize what they see based on their life experiences,” said Mr. Voytenko. “In my art I embody pain, anguish, regret, anger, despair, loneliness, but above all the empty vacuum within us that constantly searches for something greater, as the soul longs for its creator. However, I also want to show the peace and resolve that comes when the soul finds its place, when pain turns to rejoicing and despair to hopefulness: Redemption.”?
This artwork can be viewed at the museum Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Additional work is on display in the Squires Lobby inside Lee’s Humanities Building.
