The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team learns its NCAA Regional location Monday. The selection show is on the Golf Channel at 6 p.m. There are three possible destinations: Tallahassee, Fla., Stillwater, Okla., and Cle Elum, Wash. The 54-hole competition is May 9-11.
There are 72 teams and 18 individuals total in the field. They are split in thirds with 24 teams and six individuals at each location. The top eight teams and two individuals on non-advancing teams move on to Tulsa, Okla., for the National Championship May 21-24 at Tulsa Country Club.
SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee was designed by former Masters winner Fred Couples. It was named one of the top 50 courses for women by Women in Golf Magazine as was named one of the top 35 new courses in America by Golf Magazine.
Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater is an exceptionally-hard Tom Fazio project with great memories for the Mocs men’s program. Chattanooga advanced to the 2009 NCAA Men’s Championship after a third-place finish in the regional here. The facility, ranked by Travel & Leisure Golf Magazine as the best college course in the country, was the host site for the 2003 and 2011 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship.
Tumble Creek is one of three courses at Suncadia Resort. The Tom Doak design is a private-only tract while the other two courses are open to the public. It was recently rated as the fourth best course in Washington state by Golf Digest. Cle Elum is located 80 miles southeast of Seattle and just 45 minutes from famed Mount Rainier.
The women’s golf program was resurrected by Head Coach Colette Murray in 2007-08. It has been a part of NCAA Regional play all seven seasons. Former Southern Conference Player of the Year Emma de Groot (2008-11) competed as an individual as a freshman in 2008. The team has qualified ever since.
This year’s squad is assured of its bid by its win two weeks prior at the SoCon Championship. It was the fifth straight team title, while sophomore Emily McLennan (Queensland, Australia) became the fourth consecutive Moc to lay claim to medalist honors.
McLennan was joined on the All-SoCon squad by Jordan Britt (Chattanooga) and Agathe Sauzon (Valence, France). Britt earned the SoCon Player of the Year award joining de Groot (2011) as the only Mocs to capture it.
