Keep The Traditional Scholar Athlete

Saturday, April 26, 2014

i find the whole issue of unions for college sports teams very strange and i hope it does not happen or set a precedent. Northwestern is apparently getting close to this reality.

On the other hand, I do think the NCAA needs to revisit their archaic and sometimes ridiculously overstrict rules regarding stipends, payments and endorsements, etc. Yes, I know it is big business for the Universities, but they also supply the scholarships, the facilities, equipment, training and also great experience and exposure for those hoping to go on to a professional career.

If college athletes truly want to be paid or treated as professionals, then they should compete with professionals for those positions. Then the Universities should eliminate scholarships altogether and go out and "hire" the best athletes to represent them. the universities with the most money and the best coaches will field the winningest teams.

I would hate to see this happen as i would much prefer the traditional scholar athlete.
