The City Council on Tuesday night unanimously approved Fred Fletcher as the new police chief.
The former Austin, Tex., police official was chosen after a nationwide search.
He replaces Bobby Dodd, who retired at the end of last year along with most of his top staff.
Stanley Maffett has been serving as interim chief.
Chief Fletcher appeared before the council on Tuesday afternoon at an agenda session.
He was asked by Councilman Yusuf Hakeem about a speed trap on Germantown Road and about several officers convening at one eating establishment.
Chief Fletcher said it may be a positive that the officers are getting out in the community at local businesses.
