U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said they will work with the new owner of the B. Allen Casey barge to have it removed as soon as it is sold.
Lieutenant Colonel John L. Hudson, P.E., district engineer, said, "As has been reported in the news today, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved a plan for the barge to be sold. When sold, the Nashville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will work with the new owner to have the barge removed as soon as possible.
"When revoking the permit in March, the Nashville District ordered the removal of the barge. The Corps' position is that the barge still must be removed from the waterway regardless of owner."
Bankruptcy Judge Shelley Rucker has signed an order letting the sale go forward on the barge across from the Ross's Landing area.
Local officials have long considered the vacant barge an eyesore and sought its removal.
