The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public to be aware of a scam currently occurring in the area. A victim of this scam was contacted by a person identifying himself as Officer Eric Foster with the IRS #11839.
The victim was advised he owed back taxes and if he did not make arrangements to take care of this, legal action would be taken. He was instructed to get pre-paid cards from Bi-Lo with different amounts on them and to then contact Officer Eric Foster at 202-241-1436 when he was ready to transfer the money.
After the victim transferred the money as instructed, he contacted the IRS and was advised they do not do business in this fashion. He checked the balance on the pre-paid cards only to find they had a zero balance.
Officials said, "The public is requested if they are contacted by someone who identifies themselves as representing IRS and asked to send money by pre-paid cards to immediately notify law enforcement. Don’t make it easy for these unscrupulous people to make you a victim of fraud."
