Alison Powers, winner of the national championship time trials on Saturday, won the national championship race in downtown Chattanooga on Memorial Day. Eric Marcotte won in a photo finish after the 103-mile men's race.

The 34-year-old Powers, who entered the race as the favorite, finished just ahead of two other cyclists at the finish line at MLK Boulevard and Market Street.

She will represent the U.S. at the world championships in September.

The men's time trials winner, Taylor Phinney, suffered a broken lower leg while avoiding a motorcycle after his bike slid into a barrier on the first descent of Lookout Mountain. He was being treated at a local hospital. Crashing with him was Lucas Euser.

There were also crashes in the women's race.

Ms. Powers is the first person to win the Criterium, the time trials and the national championship race.

She was presented the keys to a new Volkswagen GTI.

Last year's men's winner, Freddie Rodriguez, finished 28th.

Ben King, who led much of the race, was 15th.

The races are live via Internet through USA Cycling with some of the views from a helicopter overhead and others from a pace car. http://www.usacycling.org/2014/pro-road-time-trial-nationals

National championship races for both women and men are on a course that ranges from downtown Chattanooga to the top of Lookout Mountain. Part of the race this year dips into North Chattanooga, going across the Market Street Bridge to Frazier Avenue, Woodland Avenue, steep Kent Street and Forrest Avenue to Frazier Avenue to Veterans Bridge.

One of the highlights of the race added this year was "The Wall" going up Kent Street in North Chattanooga. A large crowd was nearby by the Walnut Street Bridge at the bottom of Forrest Avenue for the tight turn headed toward Veterans Bridge.

Frazier Avenue will be closed during the races. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the Veterans Bridge using the one lane each way on the northbound side.

Part of the route again goes through the UTC campus, then down McCallie Avenue and Seventh Street.

The Lookout Mountain portion includes Ochs Highway, Scenic Highway and Cummings Highway.

During the race, all Browns Ferry Road and Cummings Highway traffic must use I-24 for access downtown. Scenic Highway is one-way down and Cummings Highway is closed east of Scenic Highway.

The women race 104 km and the men 165 km.

Thousands of spectators lined the race route.

An increasing number of planned activities are taking place at spots where the cyclists whiz past.
