Officials of the Bradley County SPCA on Wednesday afternoon responded to a call involving some 200 dogs. It turned out there were 237 dogs in deplorable conditions at what was termed a "puppy mill."
The SPCA answered a call on Candies Creek Road in the McDonald area from the Bradley County Sheriff's Department.
Rescuers had to wear masks due to the stench at the site.
A number of "pocket" beagles were crowded into small pens.
Area rescuers were volunteering to take some of the dogs.
Officials said, "We are requesting the public's assistance as we respond to this case."

"1) Financial donations. Our Paypal account is
donations@spcaofbradleycountytn.org.
"2) Adoptions. We have several wonderful dogs and cats already at the shelter!
"3) Supplies! Please bring bowls, leashes, crates, dog food, etc. to the shelter.
"4) We need volunteers on the ground to help feed, water and exercise our current guests, to do laundry and more. Please email development@spcaofbradleycountytn.org before going. That way we can make sure volunteers are scheduled to cover all shifts.
"The shelter is closed the remainder of today for intakes. The shelter does remain open for adoptions.
"The beagles will not be made immediately available for adoption. We are working with rescues around the country to find them safe places."
