Dixie Soaps will be bringing their goats, Aphrodite, a six year old Alpine, and Hermione, a five year old Alpine, to the Brainerd Farmer’s Market for a milking demonstration at 11 a.m. Saturday. Guests can see how a goat is milked and pet and feed the goats.

Dixie Soaps is owned by Bill and Becky Ensinger. They live and work on a six acre farm in Dayton.  Ms. Ensinger has raised dairy goats and farmed for 20 years. She began making soap as a way to use surplus milk, and eventually began selling her soaps and other skin care products. Dixie Soaps focuses on sustainable farming methods, and currently raise Alpine and LaMancha dairy goats, chickens, ducks, bees, as well as herbs, vegetables, and fruits.  Mr. and Mrs. Ensinger also have three helpers on the farm: Laura 3, Elizabeth 2, Gabriel 11 months, and a new baby due this winter. The girls inspired the line of baby care products, Baby Olive.

The Brainerd Community Farmers Market is held from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturdays from May 3-Dec. 20 at 20 Belvoir Ave., in the parking lot of Grace Episcopal Church. Local farmers present their freshly harvested, naturally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, dairy and meat products. Bakers will present artisan breads, sweets and pastries, and fine artists, musicians and craftsmen round out the market.

The Brainerd Community Farmers Market accepts EBT/ SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Card purchases. In addition the market also accepts cash, credit and debit card purchases. Grace Episcopal Church matches EBT/SNAP food purchases at the Brainerd Community Farmers' Market on the first Saturday of each month. Outreach for this program is made possible through a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga. SNAP recipients may bring their Electronic Benefit Transfer cards to the farmers market and obtain tokens which may be used to purchase fresh local produce, dairy products, meat products, honey, preserves, baked goods, plants used to produce food at home and more.

The mission of the Brainerd Farmers Market is to make local organic and sustainably grown produce available to the Chattanooga and Brainerd communities and to encourage healthy local food choices for Brainerd residents through educational and financial assistance programs for market patrons. Grace Episcopal Church, a 501(c)3 non-profit, provides fiscal sponsorship and the physical location for the weekly farmers' market. Grace Episcopal Church supports local farmers and community.
