A man was shot and killed at a house on Foust Street early Thursday morning.

The victim was identified as Dominic Wright, 22.

It was the city's 19th homicide of the year. That equals the total for all of last year - with almost half the year to go.

At approximately 3:42 a.m., Chattanooga Police responded to 2108 Foust St. for a person shot.  Upon arrival, officers located a black male victim deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

At this time, Investigators are processing the scene and interviewing area residents, police said later in the morning.

Chattanooga Police ask anyone with information regarding this crime to call 423-698-2525

New Police Chief Fred Fletcher told members of the Downtown Chamber of Commerce at a breakfast meeting that he had been to the scene earlier and needed to get back out to that crime-ridden section.

He said he plans to be very visible in the community and wants to work closely with residents from all parts of town.

Chief Fletcher said his department has programs in place to try to combat the rise in murders and is getting some cooperation from affected citizens.

He said of this year's murder total, "It is unacceptable."

He said of the latest murder, "There is a very good chance that it is gang-related."
