Twenty-two Tennessee teachers recently participated in the Tennessee State Library and Archives summer teacher institute on "The Forgotten Conflict: Teaching the War of 1812 in Tennessee." The two-day workshop included a history content presentation by Dr. Tom Kanon, TSLA archivist and expert on the War of 1812, living history presentations about the life of a U.S. regular and a Tennessee militia soldier during the War of 1812, close study of primary sources related to the War of 1812, tours of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and more.
"I hope all of the teachers who participated found our workshop beneficial," Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. "Offering this type of training for teachers is one of the many ways the State Library and Archives is providing valuable services to Tennesseans."
Dr. Wayne Moore, assistant state archivist at TSLA said: "TSLA is a wonderful treasure house of primary sources for Tennessee social studies teachers. This workshop is an example of our commitment to provide primary sources in a form that creative teachers can use to bring history to life."
