Man, 34, Dies Shortly After Being Arrested In Crossville

Thursday, July 31, 2014

A 34-year-old arrestee died at Crossville on Sunday.

Sheriff Butch Burgess said Rustin Grayson was brought to the Cumberland County Justice Center intake for processing after being arrested by the Crossville Police Department.

Jail staff advised that when Crossville Police arrived at intake Grayson was unable to get out of the patrol vehicle without assistance. The Crossville Police Officer requested the jail nurse to check on him. The jail nurse checked Grayson and advised the jail staff to take him to Cumberland Medical Center for further evaluation.

Jail staff transported Grayson to the Cumberland Medical Center Emergency Room, where he died while being treated at that facility.

The investigation was turned over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for further investigation upon the request of District Attorney’s Office. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death. The investigation is ongoing and further releases will be made as additional information becomes available.

It is believed that abuse of drugs is a contributing factor, Sheriff Burgess said.
