World War II Veteran Earned 2 Purple Hearts And A Bronze Star

Ben Madison Powell, Jr., 89, a native of Chickamauga, died at home on Sunday morning, August 10, 2014, in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

An ardent prayer warrior and follower of Jesus Christ, his favorite and often quoted verse was Proverbs 3:5 and 6, which begins, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart." He was a long standing member of East Ridge Presbyterian Church.

Ben was a graduate of the McCallie School and attended Georgia Tech before enlisting in the Army for service in WWII from November 1942 until January 1946. He attained the rank of staff sergeant in the 102nd Infantry, the Ozark Division and served on the front lines in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lee Powell, and his oldest grandson, Andrew Keown.

He is survived by his beloved children, children-in-law, grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins, Ben and Susan Powell, Steve and Cecelia Keown, David and Lee DuPre', Madison, Heather and Lily Powell, Cameron Powell, Joshua and Amanda Keown, Nathalie DuPre' and Sterling DuPre'. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Edward Averett and two sisters-in-law, Austin Robeson and Nathalie Jones. 

Visitation will be held at Wann Funeral Home, St. Elmo on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 6-8 p.m.

Services will be held at East Ridge Presbyterian Church, Friday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m., with burial following immediately at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Reverend John F. Richards presiding.
