World War II Veteran Earned A Purple Heart

General Harvey Cook, 89, of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, August 13, 2014.

He was born in Kinston, Al., to the late General Cook and Barcie Cook Bohannon.  General served our country during World War II in the Army and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was a graduate of Douglas High School and Sneed Junior College in Boaz, Al. He was employed with Boaz Police Department before moving to Chattanooga as a machinist at Wheland Gun Plant, Ross Mahan Foundry, Vulcan Iron Works and Fillauer. General was a member of the American Legion Post 159 and he loved to play the banjo in jam sessions in Red Bank and at Grace Nazarene Church. He was an active member of the Volunteer State Rescue Squad.  General was a member of Hixson First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, R. C. Cook.

General is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ethelene Kendrick Cook; children, Falecia Darlene Horne and husband Chuck, and Terry Cook and wife Caroline; grandchildren, Terry (Kiwi) Jr. and Abbie Cook, Brad (Kristin) Smith, all of Chattanooga, and Bryan (Erin) Smith of Denver; great-grandchildren, Kaylie Cook and Larkin Smith; siblings, Ethridge Cook and Lucille Vest; many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Manorhouse, Hearth Hospice and General’s good friend, John Dorsey for the love and care given to General during his illness. 

The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, and 12-1 p.m. on Friday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A celebration of General’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, at the funeral home chapel with Reverend Myron Wilkins and Reverend Terry Shannon officiating.  Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be made in General’s name to Hearth Hospice, 1800A Rossville Ave., Suite 7, Chattanooga, Tn. 37408, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 7625 Hamilton Park Drive, Suite 8, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421. 

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
