Former Collegedale Academy Students Charged With Robbery At Collegedale Credit Union; Text Said Holdup Was "Pretty Cool"

  • Friday, August 15, 2014

Officers from the Collegedale Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Division on Thursday arrested former students of Collegedale Academy in connection with the July 31 armed robbery of the Collegedale Credit Union.

One said in a text obtained by police that the holdup "was pretty cool. ---- the system, it was exhilarating, be a rebel ha, ha."

Arrested were Stephan Huber, 23, of 5221 Silver Lane, Apison; Caleb Minner, 23, of 5120 Silver Lane, Apison, and Matthew McKamey, 22, of 5206 Parkerson Road, Apison. All three reside in the Collegedale/Apison area. The suspects were taken into custody without incident at various locations in Collegedale and Apison.

They are charged with conspiracy and armed robbery. Each suspect was being held at the Hamilton County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Police said Huber and McKamey had given confessions.

The investigation into the robbery has been ongoing since July 31. The criminal investigation team followed up on numerous leads, used physical evidence found at the crime scene, and secured phone records that connected all three to the robbery, police said.

Police said it was Huber who walked into the credit union demanding money. He said he had a gun.

Police said, after photos of the robber were distributed to the media, three people came forward and identified Huber as the "younger white male, strawberry hair and large physique."

A demand note given to a teller asking $2,000 was left behind, and police said the fingerprints matched those of Huber.

One informant gave police the home address of Huber as well as that of a second person who was eventually charged.

A second informant provided police with multiple cell phone texts they had received from McKamey.

In one of the texts, McKamey said "a deep dark confession needed to be made."

He said, while on Xanex, he had agreed to drive the getaway car for $150.

McKamey said in a text that "the guy who robbed the bank went to Collegedale Academy." It told how he drove Huber to the credit union and how a gun was supplied "by a buddy."

Police said McKamey has long hair in a pony tail, and a witness said the driver of the pickup truck had a pony tail.

Police said both Huber and McKamey said Minner was the third person involved.
