It was the first of two scrimmages for the 2014 UTC
Mocs football team Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium and the veteran UTC defense
had three quarterback sacks and 11 tackles for loss, there was a field goal good from 54
yards out, true freshmen stepped up and the first offensive unit moved the ball
well.
“We got a lot done today and walking off the field I
feel good about how we played in our first scrimmage,” said UTC head coach Russ
Huesman whose team will also scrimmage next Friday at 3 p.m.
also at Finley
Stadium (prior to the first quarter of the Prep Football Jamboree).
Offense: QB Jacob Huesman led the first unit on a
60-yard scoring drive to open the scrimmage, capped by a 31-yard post pattern
scoring strike to Xavier Borishade (So.) who led all receivers with five
catches for 95 yards and the one score.
Statistics
Passing: Huesman led with 9 of 16 for 105 yards with
one TD toss and an interception … Alejandro Bennifield was 6 of 14 for 92 yards
… Receiving: Xavier Borishade (5-95 and 1 TD), Alphonso Stewart (3-65), C.J.
Board (2-17) … Rushing: Huesman (8-39), Derrick Craine (7-30, 1 TD), Richardre
Bagley (9-17)
Field Goals: Henrique Ribeiro (54 yards) … Nick
Pollard (38 yards)
All Baylor Grads: on Ribeiro’s long field goal, true
freshman Emory Norred was the long snapper, Jacob Huesman was the holder and
Ribeiro the kicker.
“I knew I needed to come out here and make plays and
I am pleased with how I did,” said Borishade who had nine catches for 153 yards
and two scores a year ago.
The sophomore from North Cobb High School (Ga.) is
in a battle for one of the two wide receiver spots.
“Xavier showed up today,” said offensive coordinator
Jeff Durden.
Coach Durden was pleased with the overall offensive
effort.
“Execution was okay, tempo was good, we blocked well
on the line, but need to improve on our perimeter blocking. We had too many
penalties, but were able to overcome those mistakes and still move the ball.
“Our goal of course was no turnovers and we had two
and we need to throw and catch better.
“Next week we will focus on our perimeter blocking.”
Defense: The down linemen and linebackers combined
for 14 tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks.
“Our goal coming in was no leaks in the front line
and we accomplished our goal as the offense had no long runs,” said defensive
line coach Marcus West.

Coach Huesman on the Cornerbacks: “I thought
Jerkerious Scott (Redshirt Fr.) and Jeremiah Hay (J.C. transfer) did well today
… We have Dee Virgin (returning starter), but we need others at the corner spot
to step up and make plays.”
Today’s scrimmage was a good start as the season
opener is 19 days away at Central Michigan.
Some young players stepped up and separated
themselves in the pecking order at a few positions and have earned more reps in
practice.
Next Friday’s scrimmage should give us a clearer
picture of the two deep at each position.
