  • Friday, September 12, 2014

The Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission will take action on changes in the commercial fishing proclamation among its agenda at its Sept. 18-19 meeting.

The commission will hold its September meeting at the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s Region II Ray Bell Building. Committee meetings will start at 1 p.m. on Sept. 18, while formal session is Sept. 19, beginning at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

The commission heard proposed changes that were presented by the TWRA at its Aug.

28-29 meeting held in Jackson. The proposals include changes in mussels, turtles, and paddlefish regulations.

The TWRA is proposing that paddlefish season be open from Nov. 21 through April 7, with exception for the Mississippi River where the season will remain Nov. 15 through April 15. A proposed change would be to the minimum length limit for paddlefish to 38 inches (eye-fork length) except for the Mississippi River where the minimum length will remain 34 inches.

The commission will be advised of the sandhill crane hunt permit drawing that will be held Oct. at the Birchwood Community Center in north Hamilton County. This will be the second year for the sandhill crane hunt. The TFWC established the dates of  Nov. 22-23 and Nov. 29 through Jan. 1, 2015.

The first segment of the state’s dove hunting season began Sept. 1. An update of the opening segment will be given.

Wildlife and Forestry Division Chief will present two of the division’s annual awards, the technician and biologist of the year awards. Don King, Chief of the Information and Education Division, will provide a status on the TWRA promotional campaigns and outreach efforts.
