UTC Golfer's Tied For Third At Tar Heel Intercollegiate

  • Friday, September 12, 2014
Ewan Scott took his turn firing the low round for the Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team. The native of St. Andrews, Scotland, missed his collegiate career low card by a single shot firing a 4-under par 68 in the opening round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.

According to Scott, there was one difference between today’s round and last weekend’s 54-hole 3-over par finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.

“It all started with holing a long putt for birdie on one,” Scott stated.

“It really ignited the round. I hit to six feet on six and holed the eagle putt. It was a pretty good day. I was never in trouble. I holed a few more putts than I did at the Farm. There were good birdie putts and good par putts, it was just a solid day.”

Scott was steady in today’s opening round with an eagle, three birdies and 13 pars offsetting a single bogey. He has just nine bogeys in his first 72 holes this season. He hit 11 fairways and 15 greens in traversing the 7,242-yard UNC Finley Golf Course Tract.

Liam Johnston turned in his third straight par or better card with an even-par total of 72. Brooks Thomas and Wes Gosselin each tallied 1-over 73’s, while Andrew Weathers had the drop score with an 80.

The Mocs are tied for third at 2-under 286. They’re level with VCU and East Carolina, four behind second-place Charlotte at 282. Host North Carolina has a nine-shot advantage after a 15-under 273 today.

Scott is in fifth individually, two strokes behind leader Bryce Howell of Furman. Howell shot 66 to stand one ahead of the Tar Heel trio of Ben Griffin, William Register and Brandon Dalinka at minus five.

The second round starts Saturday morning at 8:50 a.m., for the Mocs. Weathers leads off No. 1 followed by Gosselin (9:00), Thomas (9:10), Johnston (9:20) and Scott (9:30). The Mocs are paired with GRU Augusta, Gardner-Webb and Mercer.
