Lee Men Finish Second At Montevallo Full Moon Golf Invitational

  • Tuesday, September 16, 2014
Lee's young men's golf team battled to a second-place finish in the Montevallo University Full Moon Invitational on a near-perfect Tuesday afternoon. While the Flames were finishing the 36-hole event with solid rounds of 283-276 - 559, West Georgia, also a member of the Gulf South Conference, took the team honors with rounds of 278-271 - 549.

Junior Taylor Davis gave Lee a runner-up finish in the medalist competition.
Davis was on his game for the entire 36 holes, posting scores of 67-68 - 135. His 7-under total on the par 71 Timberline Golf Club course was one stroke off the pace set by West Georgia's Kevin Clarke. He tallied a 66-68 - 134. Corey Evans of West Georgia was third (137). Dalton Skinner of Montevallo was fourth (137) and Carson Vaughn helped West Georgia take first place with a 139.

"I'm very pleased with today's round," said coach John Maupin. "I thought we played well, and all in all it was a very good start to the season. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other guy, West Georgia played some great golf."

Maupin added, "We made a lot of birdies today - 24 I think. We just still need to clean up a few things in order to get the most out of it. We have a lot of positive takeaways, and can definitely use this experience moving forward. We got another good round by Taylor (Davis). He had an outstanding start for his season. Taylor showed a lot of maturity and poise out there. If he continues to do that, he's going to have the chance to win a lot of tournaments."

Adam Wright shot a blistering Tuesday round and his 65 tied for top honors of the day. His two-day total was 75-65- 140, good enough for a sixth-place tie. Peyton Sliger tied for 11th with a consistent 71-71 - 142. Matt Strube recorded the final score that counted for the Flames on Tuesday when he tallied a 73-72 - 145. Ryne Thompson rounded out the Lee scoring with a 72-74 - 146.

"I'm really proud of the way Adam came back today," praised Maupin. "Sixty-five was a great score, and even better, it was bogey free. That's a great sign of the progress he has made. I was also pleased with the way Peyton (Sliger) came back in his round after he got off to a rough start, but closed in 31.

The Flames will return to action on Sept. 29 when they travel to Columbus, Ga. to take part in the Cougar Invitational.
