  • Saturday, September 20, 2014
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team had a solid first day at the USC Upstate Fall Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. this afternoon.  The Mocs won six of seven singles matches and a pair of doubles on opening day.

Chattanooga won two singles matches in the top Green Draw.  Freshman Samantha Caswell breezed to a (6-0, 6-0) win over UNC Ashville’s Carolina Sherrer while sophomore Rachele Gazzola posted a (6-3, 6-4) win over Wofford’s Kalli Karas.  Junior Kayla Jones is the No.
1 seed in the bracket and had an opening round bye.

The Mocs were 2-1 in the white draw, led by junior Alison Storie’s big upset in the first round.  She scored a (6-1, 6-0) win over Wofford’s Lauren Reid, the No. 4 seed.

Senior Kaylene Chadwell is the No. 2 seed and had a (6-1, 6-0) win over Presbyterian’s Sara McBride.  Junior Katie Polk lost to third-seeded Ana Gerbasi (6-1, 6-4) of ETSU.

Senior Claire Mulyadi also had a nice win in the Black Draw.  She defeated third-seeded Catherine Martin of Wofford (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) in three sets.  Junior Kelsey Coots, the No. 4 seed, scored a (6-1, 6-1) win over UNCA’s Amalie Davidsen.

The Mocs stumbled slightly in the Green doubles draw.  Jones and Caswell teamed up as the top-seed, but lost in the quarterfinals to ETSU’s Gerbasi and Nychytailova in a tiebreaker (8-7 (4)). Polk and Gazzola won their first round match over Upstate’s None Ruppert and Sharlee Deshmukh (8-4) before falling to Wofford’s Karas and Lauren Reid in the second.

In the White doubles bracket, Coots and Chadwell teamed up as the No. 4 seed.  They rolled through their first round with an 8-0 win over Wofford’s Martin and Samantha Russell.  Mulyadi and Storie lost their first round match to UNCA’s Ericka Rivero and Hunter Hall.

UTC will be back on the courts tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.  Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete results and updated draws at the end of competition on Saturday.
