The Chattanooga Mocs women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the USC Upstate Fall Classic with titles in three draws today. UTC won five of six matches on the final day of the first tournament of the year.
“It was a really good start to the fall season,” stated head coach Jeff Clark. “It was nice to take home some titles, while continuing to improve over the weekend.”
The Mocs were co-Champs in the top singles bracket. Junior Kayla Jones and freshman Samantha Caswell both advanced to the finals of the Green draw, but the two teammates did not play the championship match.
Junior Kelsey Coots won the Black singles title. She scored a (6-4, 6-2) win over UNC Asheville’s Emily McNall in today’s finals. Junior Katie Polk won the White consolation bracket. She defeated Upstate’s Nona Ruppert (6-3, 6-1). Sophomore Rachele Gazzola also had a (6-2, 6-1) win over USCU’s Sharlee Deshmukh in consolation action.
Jones and Caswell teamed up as the top doubles squad in the tournament. They won the Green draw with an 8-3 victory over Wofford’s Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid. Senior Claire Mulyadi and junior Alison Storie won the White consolation bracket with an 8-6 triumph against Presbyterian’s Carolina de Loach and Antonia Conze.
The Mocs now get ready for the upcoming UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic on Oct. 3-5. Action takes place at the Champions Club in Chattanooga and features top men’s and women’s teams from around the region. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for more information as the event draws near.
