Nobel Laureate Thomas J. Sargent To Speak At UTC Oct 6

Nobel laureate Thomas J. Sargent will speak in the Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series Monday, Oct. 6, at noon in the UTC University Center Auditorium.  Dr. Sargent will discuss “Lessons from the Fiscal History of the United States.”

Sponsored by the Scott L. Probasco, Jr. Chair of Free Enterprise, this event is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Dr. Sargent holds the Ph.D. from Harvard University and has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from the Stockholm School of Economics, European University Institute, the University of Bern and the University of Minnesota. 

He is the William R. Berkeley Professor of Economics and Business at New York University.  He is a fellow of the Econometric Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and past president of the American Economic Association, the Econometric Society, and the Society for Economic Dynamics and Control. 

More than 150 of Dr. Sargent’s articles have been published in journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Economic Theory, Quantitative Economics, International Economic Review, Journal of Banking and Finance and the Quarterly Journal of Economics.  He is the author of 12 books, including Robustness, The Big Problem of Small Change, The Conquest of American Inflation, Rational Expectations Econometrics and a textbook on Recursive Macroeconomic Theory. 

In 2011, Dr. Sargent was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his “empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy.” 

Dr. Edward J. López will critique the speech.  Dr. López is professor of Economics and BB&T Distinguished Professor of Capitalism at Western Carolina University.  He is the author of two books, has published more than 40 scholarly articles and book chapters in journals, and served as a staff economist on the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, co-editor of the Journal of Economics and Finance Education, regional editor for the Americas of the Journal of Entrepreneurship & Public Policy, and editor of symposia in both Public Choice and the Review of Austrian Economics.
