Owsley Gets 12 And Half Years In Federal Prison After Arrest On String Of Robberies

  • Monday, September 22, 2014

Demarcus Anthony Owsley, who was arrested along with Shawn Lawaun Davis on a string of robberies, was sentenced on Monday to serve 12 and a half years in federal prison.

Owsley, 24, appeared before Federal Judge Sandy Mattice.

Shawn Lawaun Davis, 29, went to trial recently and was convicted. He faces later sentencing.

Attorney Michael Keith Davis said Owsley should get some credit because he told authorities that Davis was not involved in one of the robberies as agents initially thought. He said that charge was dropped against Davis as a result.

Prosecutor Chris Poole said that was true. He said Owsley gave the name of the person involved in that holdup, but he said that is the only proof the government has. He said Owsley refuses to testify in court.

Owsley and Davis were caught last September after a chase through the Murray Hills neighborhood following a holdup at the Exxon on Highway 58.

Both were also charged by state authorities with the Feb. 21 armed robbery of the Star Plus Food Mart at 7490 Lee Highway, the March 10 robbery of Hardees at 4831 Hwy. 58 and the March 26 robbery at 3649 Brainerd Road of O’Reilly’s Auto Parts.

Davis was also charged with a holdup at Jack's Bait and Tackle Shop on March 22.

In the Exxon robbery, the clerk said two black males entered with a silver revolver and demanded money.   They then fled on foot toward Murray Hills Drive.  The clerk and a customer gave chase to a wooded area off Murray Hills Drive.

Arriving officers set up a perimeter and K-9 units responded.  The silver revolver was found in a swimming pool behind a house.  Davis later ran out of the woods and was taken into custody.  He was wearing blue jeans, a black T-shirt and black and white shoes.  During the search of the wooded area, a red jacket with a black stripe on the sleeve and stars in the black stripe was found.  Police said one of the robbers was wearing a similar jacket in all three holdups.

Also found in the woods was a red bandana and a dark-colored ball cap.  Police said the jacket,  bandana and ball cap can all be seen in a video of the Exxon robbery as well as the black T-shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes that Davis was wearing.

Money was also found in the woods which was suspected to be from the robbery.  Police said Owsley was arrested after a citizen reported a man running into the woods around Kings Point Drive.  He was taken into custody around 5100 Amnicola Highway at the on ramp to Highway 153.

Both Davis and Owsley denied any involvement in the robbery despite what police said was "overwhelming evidence against them."

In the Star Plus Food Mart robbery, a clerk said two black males came into the store with one who stayed by the door armed with a silver revolver. The other robber came behind the counter and demanded money from the safe and cash register. The robber took money from the drawer after the clerk opened the register. The clerk said there was no safe in the store.

The robber took the clerk's wallet after searching his pockets. He also took his IPhone off the counter.

Police said Davis and Owsley were charged with the Star Plus Food Mart robbery "based on the clothing being identical, the similarities in the gun and the exact same method of operation in the two robberies."

In the Jack's Bait and Tackle Shop robbery, the owner said he was in the store alone when a black male armed with a gun came in and demanded money. He said the robber placed a plastic bag on the counter, but he said he put the cash in a paper bag instead. The plastic bag was left behind and it was later taken into evidence.

Police said Davis was charged in this robbery "due to the clothing description being the same, the weapon description being the same and the method of both robberies being the same."
