James Martin Tredway, 91, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, September 26, 2014.

Mr. Tredway was born and raised in Chattanooga.  He was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1941, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in South Africa and a member of First Baptist Church.  He began his career with Southern Railway as a telegraph operator and sent the last telegraph message from Chattanooga before becoming a station agent.  He retired in 1985 from Southern Railway with over 45 years of service.  He was a Boy Scout leader and was a well loved and respected girl’s and women’s softball coach for over 30 years.

After retirement, he volunteered at the Tennessee Railroad Museum, Memorial Hospital, Orange Grove, Chattanooga Community Kitchen and First Baptist Church driving the church bus for church activities and grocery shopping.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn B. Tredway; parents, Marshall and Edna Tredway; and sisters, Ruth Parrish and Louise Hawk.

Surviving are his children, Larry Martin (Marsha) Tredway of Richmond, Tx., Kay (Tommy) Hale of Ooltewah, and Karen (Jimmy) Fogo of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Christy (John) Martin, Jimbo (Leslie) Fogo, Caitlin Tredway and Byron Fogo; great-grandchildren, J. D. and Audrey Grace Martin, and Tanner Fogo.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the funeral home with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Martin Boyd Christian Home for the excellent care shown to their father, and to his sitters, Margie Love, Cassandra Jennings, Tawanna Byrd and Benita Walker.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Martin Boyd Christian Home (6845 Standifer Gap Road, Chattanooga, TN 37412), First Baptist Church (401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402), Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (4119 Cromwell Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37421) or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.
