The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team was defeated 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Maclellan Gym by ETSU in its second Southern Conference match of the season. The Bucs bested the Mocs 25-18, 25-16, 22-25 and 26-24.
“We played well in the third quarter, but we still have to learn to play that way the entire match,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “ETSU got the momentum early and only let it slip once.”
Sophomore Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) led the team with 12 kills.
Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and sophomore Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) finished with nine and eight kills, respectively. Sophomore Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) led the Chattanooga setters with 19 assists.
The UTC defense was directed by junior Lauren Gainer (Boca Raton, Fla.). The middle blocker downed five assisted blocks, while junior Sarah Batterton (Colbert, Wash.) totaled four blocks – two solo, two assisted. The Mocs out-blocked the Bucs 12.5-11.5.
Davenport and Alvarado each racked up three kills in the first set, and Wieser totaled four kills in the second set. Alvarado returned as the fourth set’s kills leader with four kills.
The Mocs were out-hit .199-.130, spelling trouble for UTC. ETSU also out-killed Chattanooga 57-37.
Chattanooga is back in action next week as Maclellan Gym hosts The Citadel friday at 6 p.m. and Western Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m.
