Covenant, Maryville Tie In USA South Match up

  • Tuesday, September 30, 2014
In a key early season USA South matchup, and a battle for the Highland Cup, the Covenant men's soccer team tied with Maryville 0-0 on Tuesday night.

The tie keeps Covenant in first place in the USA South with a 2-0-1 conference record. Covenant is 6-3-2 overall on the season. Maryville goes to 6-3-1 on the year and 2-1-1 in league play.

Covenant had chances to break the scoreless tie throughout the contest as they held a 13-3 edge in shots on goal. Maryville keeper Ben Munger was up to the challenge, however, as he made saves on all 13 shots.
One of Covenant's best chances came late in the second half, but Hunter Brock's shot hit the post and deflected away from the goal in the 88th minute of play.

In both overtime periods, each team had had a shot on goal but keepers Daniel Kubin for Covenant and Munger for Maryville made saves to keep the match scoreless.

Kubin made three saves and picked up his fourth shutout of the year in the process. Kubin's goals against average dropped to 0.93 after the contest, third-best in the USA South.

Overall, Covenant outshot the host Scots 19-17 on the night. Hunter Brock led Covenant with seven shots, with four being on target, while Hudson Brock and Ian Meredith had three shots apiece.

Covenant will be back in action on Saturday when USA South foe LaGrange comes to Scotland Yard for Homecoming. Match time is set for 7 p.m., or 30 minutes after the women's match vs. LaGrange concludes. Fireworks will follow after the game.
