On Monday Southern Adventist University is hosting a “Street Store” in downtown Chattanooga from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in partnership with the Salvation Army. Chattanooga’s Street Store will take place on the sidewalk in front of the Salvation Army, 800 McCallie Ave. If it rains, the store will move inside The Salvation Army.
Street Stores are sidewalk pop-up shops that offers free clothes to the homeless, providing them with a dignified shopping experience as they try on and select their own garments. "According to information gathered for the city’s Blueprint to End Chronic Homelessness, more than 4,094 individuals experience homelessness each year in Chattanooga, with over 1,000 homeless children in public schools. Each night, an estimated 400-500 individuals sleep outside or in shelters," officials said.
Approximately 50 Southern students, along with Salvation Army staff, will be volunteering at the event to assist with clothes and hand out free lunches for the “shoppers.”
